Chris

Moving to Japan to teach on the Japan Exchange Teaching programme in 2012 (JET), Chris resurrected his discarded dream of becoming a filmmaker, by launching a Youtube channel soon after he arrived. Through the fresh perspective on life in rural Japan and the unfiltered style of commentary (which essentially means a lot of swearing), the Abroad in Japan channel quickly grew to become one of the biggest online resources on all things Japan. In the years since he’s produced over 200 episodes, climbed Mount Fuji, cycled 2,000km across the country, and eaten his way through every variety of convenience store fried chicken. And with the prospect of more varieties of convenience store fried chicken on the horizon, he has no sign of stopping any time soon.

Chris’ Timeline

2012

Arrived in Japan to work as a teacher. Started the Abroad in Japan channel to remind friends and family I was alive

2013

Nearly froze to death on the summit of Mount Fuji. Befriended Natsuki on a street corner.

2014

Had a viral hit video teaching Japanese people how to swear. Quickly branded a “Swear Word Missionary”.

2015

Abroad in Japan reaches 100,000 subscribers. Finished teaching with 2,000 hours classroom experience.

2016

Had a viral hit video exploring a Love Hotel with an eccentric Japanese man. Discovered Wagyu beef for the first time.

2017

Got rudely awoken by a North Korean missile at 6am and was subsequently featured in global media as a North Korean expert. Did a Tedx Talk on why Youtube is good. Ate more Wagyu beef.

2018

Reached 1,000,000 subscribers. Embarked on a celebratory never-ending 2,000km cycle across Japan and filmed a 28-part travel series charting the nightmarish journey.

2019

Had a viral hit video exploring another Love Hotel with the same eccentric Japanese man as before. Produced a documentary on the Fukushima disaster and spent a week with Japanese rock legend Hyde from L’arc en Ciel.

2020

Still working on it. But probably more Wagyu beef and love hotels.
